Reading and Language Arts
In the primary grades, our reading program teaches students how to read. The mastery of reading is an essential skill required for academic performance and is the focus of much of our primary grade instructional time. Beginning in the 2010-11 school year, our school was selected to join the Rowland Reading Super School Initiative, which aims to create excellence in primary-grade reading instruction using the "Superkids" reading program. Our primary teachers have undergone training with national-renown reading experts to guarantee academic achievement of our primary grade students. For more information, please see our Rowland Reading page. In the intermediate grades, our students make the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Fourth and fifth grade reading is done in a cross-curriculum manner with our social studies, religion, and other core curriculum areas. For example, a portion of the year is devoted to a survey of world culture, including Japan and the far east, Europe, and Latin America, as well as selected elements of US History, including World War II. Our junior high classes survey an expanded canon of literature of all genres, including poetry, mystery, historical fiction, mythology and folklore, Shakespeare, science fiction and biography. The language arts portion of our curriculum emphasizes to ability to employ expository writing to communicate in a clear, effective manner. Writing is taught in a cross-curriculum manner. For example, when our seventh graders were recently studying animal adaptation and evolution in their science class, they were given an assignment of writing a series of essays about selected topics in this area as a way to develop their expository writing abilities.
