Mathematics
Beginning in the 2011-12 school year, we have implemented a program fusing workbook-based mathematical studies with the Singapore math method of instruction. Singapore math is based on the principle of teaching mathematical concepts moving from concrete through pictorial to abstract. For example, introduction of abstract decimal fractions (in Grade 4) is preceded by their pictorial model of centimeters and millimeters on a metric ruler, but even earlier (in Grades 2 and 3) addition and subtraction of decimals is studied in the concrete form of dollars and cents In order to facilitate its adoption of the Singapore math program, we have partnered with Dr. Eileen Knight, professor of education at St. Xavier University, who is a leading expert on Singapore Math and elementary school mathematics education. Dr. Knight has individually observed each classroom at the school and has provided hands-on mentoring to each individual teacher. She also has conducted several workshops for the school faculty. Our innovative partnership with St. Xavier University was recently featured in an article in the SouthtownStar newspaper. In primary grades, we focus on imparting a solid core of foundational mathematical skills, especially arithmetic and other basic mathematical concepts such as counting and comparisons. As a service project, our junior high students help our primary students by using flash-cards to drill them on basic arithmetic. Fifth and sixth grade solidifies this foundation and begins the transition to pre-algebra. Seventh grade provides an in-depth study of pre-algebra, while eighth grade is devoted to a detailed survey of modern algebra. Math instruction is integrated with other subject areas as appropriate. For example, when our intermediate students study unit conversion in math, the physical interpretation of these conversions are covered in science class. We are particularly proud of the level of math achievement that our students have demonstrated upon graduation from St. Christopher. In our graduating class of 2011, approximately 75% of our graduates were either placed into Honors Algebra for their freshman year of high school or tested out of freshman algebra altogether and began their high school math studies with sophomore-level geometry.
