Physical Education and Health General Information
Gym classes are conducted weekly for grades kindergarten through eighth grade. The classes are conducted either in the school’s spacious gymnasium facility or outside as the weather permits. Students participate in a variety of individual and team sports, such as basketball, volleyball, softball and track, under the direction of our physical education teacher, Mrs. Amy Wiggins. Preschool does not participate in formal gym classes; however, the preschool curriculum features gross motor skill development as one of its components. Our gym classes also feature a health education component, which expands the students’ knowledge and understanding of healthy living and lifestyles. In addition, for the 2011-12 school year, our school is incorporating brain-based education strategies into all of our classrooms, with a focus on kindergarten through fourth grade. This effort is led by Mrs. Wiggins. Brain-based learning principles are based on current research from neuroscience and emphasizes how the brain learns naturally based on what we currently know about the actual structure and function of the human brain at varying developmental stages. A variety of physical motor and coordination activities are done at various points during classes to strengthen neural pathways in students and help them to re-energize and better retain information.Interscholastic Athletics The school also features a vibrant interscholastic athletics program, which is detailed on the St. Christopher Athletic Association web site located at www.stchrissports.com .
