Science
Science instruction in our primary grades is done primarily via hands-on activities that probe and explore areas of nature and earth science, including plants, animals, rocks, weather and other natural phenomena. The junior high curriculum features earth science in sixth grade, the life sciences in seventh grade, and the physical sciences in eighth grade. Also, laboratory investigation is a crucial component of our junior high sciences classes. Junior high students typically are in our sciences labs several times per week. For example, last year when the eighth grade classes was studying Newtonian physics, they designed their own roller coasters to study the concept of acceleration and had balloon-powered toy car races to probe the concept of force. Periodically our school features a science fair competition, where outside judges, including science professionals, educational professionals from other schools, and members of the community evaluate presentations from our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and quiz them on their understanding of the project and their grasp of the scientific method. The school also hosts a science fair open house and invention fair which features class science fair projects for kindergarten through third grade, and allows fourth and fifth graders show their creativity and innovation at the invention fair.
