Social Studies

Our school recently unveiled a new social studies curriculum for students in first through eighth grades. This curriculum was developed by the social sciences curriculum committee of the Office of Catholic Education at Archdiocese of Chicago.

Our long-time social studies teacher, Mr. Greg Laurinaitis, was a key member of this curriculum committee and spent long hours at the Archdiocesan Office of Catholic Education with other committee members conceptualizing and designing the program. We are among the first schools in the entire archdiocese to begin implementation of this cutting-edge social studies program, thanks to the key role Mr. Laurinaitis has played in helping our school’s education staff transition to the new curriculum.

The curriculum integrates cultural, economic, sociological and geographic themes and is structured by themes, as follows:

  • Kindergarden: Farms, Celebrating Differences, and Growth and Change
  • First: Our communities and cultures
  • Second: Guide to the USA and basic economics
  • Third: Government and Native Americans
  • Fourth: Early explorers, Illinois, U.S. Regions
  • Fifth: Colonization, American Revolution and Civil War
  • Sixth: Developing Cultures, Legacies of Culture, and Decline of Cultures
  • Seventh: Constitution, Social Reform, Expansion
  • Eighth: Globialization, Economics, Social Justice

The program is based on inquiry-based learning concepts in which students are expected to take an active role in their learning and develop experimental and analytical skills, rather than simply memorize information from a book. The curriculum examines five topics per grade level, spending six to eight weeks per topic. The objective is to obtain a comprehensive understanding of key concepts in the social sciences, rather than trying to cover many topics at a superficial level.
