Spanish Language Instruction

spanish class

As the world shrinks due to the rapid pace of technological innovation, it is more important than ever that students gain fluency in more than one language. Among elementary schools, St. Christopher is a leader in foriegn language curriculum and innovation.

Our foreign language program has been completely revamped and expanded for the 2011-12 school year. Beginning in October, 2011, spanish language instruction is taught daily to fourth through eighth grade students throughout the school year. As part of our newly-lengthened school day, students in all grades spend 50 minutes a day in spanish instruction and immersion. We use the critically-acclaimed Rosetta Stone suite of software products to aid in student education. Students use this software in one of our three computer labs on a daily basis to aid in augmenting their written and oral command of the Spanish language.

In the younger grades, the focus is primarily on words and simple phrases, such as greetings, numbers, colors, body parts and animals. As the students progress, more advanced material is covered, culminated in junior high, where formal grammar and verb conjugation is covered.

By exposing our students to foreign language instruction at an early age, we hope to take advantage of the natural ease with which young chldren can acquire foreign languages. Additionally, by incorporating foreign language instruction throughout the entire grade school years will facilitate students' transition to the required foreign language study in high school.
